How to Change Your MOTD (Welcome Message) for Vintage Story

The message players see when they join is the WelcomeMessage, stored in
serverconfig.json. (Vintage Story does not use a server.cfg file — all
server settings live in serverconfig.json.)

Steps#

1.
Log in to the FSH Panel.
2.
Stop the server and wait for it to fully shut down.
(Edits made while the server is running are overwritten on shutdown.)
3.
Open the File Manager and go to:
data/serverconfig.json
4.
Find the WelcomeMessage line. By default it reads:
"WelcomeMessage": "Welcome {0}, may you survive well and prosper",
5.
Replace the text inside the quotes with your own message, keeping the
surrounding double quotes and the trailing comma:
"WelcomeMessage": "Welcome to the Four Seasons realm, {0}!",
{0} is replaced with the joining player's name. You can leave it out if you
don't want to mention their name.
6.
Save the file, then start the server.

Notes#

Keep the JSON valid. Don't remove the quotes or the comma, and don't use
unescaped double quotes inside your message — that breaks the file and the server
may fail to read its config. For a quote inside the message, write \".
This setting isn't a Startup variable, so the server won't overwrite it on
boot — your message stays until you change it again.
Must edit while stopped. Changes to serverconfig.json only stick if made
with the server offline.
